Interview with Stella from Warpaint.
Warpaint are this amazing prog style rock band from LA who were just out here recently for Laneway Festival. To be honest I didn’t really know that much about the band before I heard that they were announced for Laneway. I’d heard the song Undertow and I’d gone “Hey that’s a cool song” but I hadn’t really explored the depth of material these guys have and the impressive music that they make.
I can’t decide whether I want to talk about the fact that this is an all girl band or not. It was just International Womens Day yesterday so I feel like I should be celebrating the fact that women are awesome but I also don’t want to qualify my praise of the band by going “They are fantastic musicians AND they are women! How crazy is that!” I like that these guys have taken a few risks with their music, gone ‘against the tide’ (LOL) of what has been emerging in current trends in music and made some really dark rock tunes.
I spoke to Stella who is the drummer for these guys after their second Northcote Social Club show in Feb. She was very talkative and interesting and in some points reasonably argumentative (but I’ve edited those bits out to make myself seem more credible :D ). There was much more to this interview and if I can be bothered I really should upload the second half where she discusses how they are going to attempt to write and tour at the same time. I hope it works, I can’t wait to hear more from these ladies.
